MST-CAN Study Privacy Notice
About this study
We are carrying out a research study involving families who have contact with some children’s social care services provided by Sandwell Children’s Trust.
The aim of the study is to understand whether a new approach to supporting families may be helpful in the future. The study is funded by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF).

Who we are
The study is organised by the Centre for Health Service Studies at the University of Kent.
When collecting and using personal information for this study, the University of Kent is the data controller.
This means the University decides what information is collected and how it is used.
What the study involves
The study evaluates a new approach to working with families involved with children’s social care services in Sandwell. This approach includes staff trained to provide intensive therapy and practical family support.
The research examines whether this approach leads to better outcomes than the current standard support offered to families.

Ethical approval
This study has been reviewed and approved by the University of Kent Research Ethics Committee (reference number 1070).
Information we collect
With consent, we collect personal information such as:
- Name and contact details
- Date of birth, gender and ethnicity
- Information about behaviour, mental health and wellbeing
- Family circumstances
- Information about involvement with police, courts or school exclusions
Information may be provided by the MST team, questionnaires, interviews, or directly from you or the child in your care.
Lawful basis for using information
We process personal information under the public task basis (Article 6(1)(e) UK GDPR).
Special category data and criminal offence data are processed where necessary for research in the public interest under Article 9(2)(j) and Article 10 UK GDPR.
How information is used and shared
Information is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the MST-CAN approach and to produce anonymised research reports.
Reports will not identify any individual and will be published on the Youth Endowment Fund website.
If safeguarding concerns arise, information may be shared under legal obligation.

Youth Endowment Fund data archive
After the study, identifiable data about parents and carers will be removed.
Data about young people will be transferred to the Youth Endowment Fund and stored within the Office for National Statistics Secure Research Service.
This archive is protected by the ONS Five Safes framework and can only be accessed by approved researchers for public interest research.

Retention and deletion
The University of Kent will retain anonymised written data for up to five years and electronic data for up to ten years.
The Youth Endowment Fund will review archived data every five years to assess ongoing research value.

- Request restriction or deletion where applicable
